Styled Two Ways: color of the year

Look 1

Look 2

Marsala - Get The Look

In case you haven't heard, Pantone has chosen Marsala as the color of 2015.  It is a warm, sultry wine color that is flattering on pretty much any skin tone, and can be played up in multiple ways, whether it be as clothing, accessories, or beauty.  While I must admit I was a bit skeptical about this color pick initially, I can now say I've grown more excited as I've realized the versatility of the rich shade, perfect to start wearing now and through the season.

I think shorts can sometimes be underestimated.  They're great, even in the winter, because they can be dressed up without feeling stuffy the way a dress or a skirt can feel.  Throw them on over tights, and you are warm, dressed up, and free to move without restriction.  I tried two looks here - one with a casual long sleeve top, tucked in to show off the cinched waistline of these fabulous shorts.  The lacy top in look two is a little more daring and sexy, something you can wear to a holiday party.

Of course, how else would I complete this look but with plum-wine stained lips. I'm so into the Melted lippies lately because they feel great on - staying power without drying out the lips.  Not to mention the gorgeous colors.

How will you be working Marsala into your wardrobe this year?  Into it or not?

Jewels & Chains

Dress - Elizabeth & James, similar here (on sale),
also here and here
Neckpiece - Haute Hippie

I scored this dress at an Elizabeth and James sample sale recently.  There's no better feeling than finding a basic piece that you can wear over and over-- and on sale.  From the front, it's a simple black dress, but in the back there's a sneaky little cutout that is just low enough to give this slinky piece an extra bit of sexy.
As for the neckpiece: I've discovered that Haute Hippie has an amazing collection of them- who knew? I fell in love with this gorgeous jeweled accessory, which adorns the chest and shoulders in a draping pattern that somehow turns layers of metal chains into a shape that is delicate and feminine.  And with my new sample sale find, I knew they would be perfectly coupled. Love at first wear.

I think neckpieces are a great way to change up your wardrobe and try out a new trend.  Haute Hippie also has simpler pieces like this one, which you can layer over a classic button-down or any basic outfit that's already in your closet.  It will add an automatic wow-factor, and make any outfit look completely different without having to go out and buy several new pieces.

City Lights

Dress - Wyatt Orr
Shoes - United Nude
Trench coat - Front Row

Loving this Wyatt Orr dress.  There's so much dimension to it.  The fabric feels light and elegant and flows with your movements, in all of its layers and strategically placed asymmetrical draping.  The feeling is ladylike yet smart and architectural.  I am always attracted to a dress with unique construction, and it was a perfect match for my shiny pair of  United Nude gems.

City Chic

Cape, tank, and leggings - Haute Hippie
Boots - Sam Edelman//Clutch - Purses for Nurses

Who isn't looking for a perfect coverup for the cooler weather that doesn't make you look like a giant marshmallow? This cape is the answer.  It's perfect for keeping warm, yet light enough to traipse around the city.  I love its unique hemline and elegant, button-adorned seams.  Luxurious without feeling heavy.  Capes were all over the FW14 runways.  I paired it with an asymmetrical tank to create more lines, along with unconventionally-seamed leggings with side-zips for added fun.  The result is city-chic with simplicity and ease.

Birthday Fun

I've been a bit off-the-grid here lately, and it had to do mostly with my birthday in this past week.  The celebrations turned out to be much more than I had expected.  My family and friends threw me a lovely surprise party, and I was certainly caught off-guard.  Thought I was going to a birthday brunch with my brothers!

It's been an an amazing, eventful, productive year, and while the journey always must include the downs with the up, that's what makes life real.  I'm thankful for everything and everyone in my life and look forward to what's in store for the next year and beyond!
xx
